Meet Karla Wilson, founder of Music Therapy at Home, and advocate for caregivers. Her career as a musician began at the age of 6 with from an organ, to the piano, then to the vocalist. This beginning eventually led her to Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music. Karla has a degree in Music Therapy and has been a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC) for 30 years.
Over this time period, she spent 13 years as a complementary therapies team manager for a Florida Hospice which gave her incredible opportunities to collaborate with massage and Reiki therapists, art therapists, and volunteers while working closely with nurses, physicians, home health caregivers, social workers, and chaplains.
Karla is no stranger to the challenges caregivers face as a caregiver for her sister, mother, and as a foster mother for a young adult with cerebral palsy and complex medical issues.
From her own personal experience of loss and grief to the professional side with bereaved family members in hospice, she knows first hand how music therapy is a "helping profession" at the physiological level. As a therapist, she has been blessed to work with clients with diverse needs of all ages. From children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities in a school or day program setting to children with severe emotional disturbance and attachment disorder resulting from trauma and abuse, to adults with dementia and other neurological disorders.
